Man alive, that was exciting! Don't let 'em get to you Robert. Goalies are great targets, but can't be perfect brick walls for every shot. You'll get AKA next time...
Dawn and son: Watching goalies is a great way to learn the position (I watched Patrick Roy, Andy Moog and Felix Potvin a bunch). Other than that, stretch ⦠a lot. Flexibility is key. Positioning/playing the angles is important. The best goalies minimize the angles on shooters by playing in front of the crease to minimize shootersâ options. Also, an easy hand-eye coordination drill like bouncing and catching a couple of tennis balls against a wall worked for goal god Vladislav Tretiak and his pupil, Eddie Belfour.
Kandace and Aly, my son was wondering why you weren't wearing your helmet, neck guard, chest protector and shoulder guard, gloves, knee pads, elbow pads and mouth guard? Try getting one past Robert with gear on! And Robert, my 9-year-old plays right wing, sometimes center, on the a Plano league at the Stars Center. He studies goalie's moves and wants to be a back-up goalie. Any advice?
Three things:
1. Robert - I think the goal of being a goalie is to NOT let the puck get past you.
2. Kandace, Aly - Next stop ... Assassination City Roller Derby!
3. Dallas Stars - Watch this instead of reviewing tape of Red Wing games 1 and 2. You'll laugh, de-stress and take the next two at AAC.
