Oak Hill Students Get Schooled in Giving
The Giving Project benefitting children and families in Haiti is a favorite among students who are celebrating their eighth year supporting the non-profit efforts. This year, Oak Hill Academy students undertook quite a task when they eagerly chose to dedicate themselves to another year of participation.
Believing their support to be a critical opportunity for the sharing of blessings, Oak Hill students, families and faculty gave generously to every effort devoted to The Giving Project - 2009. It began in the fall with the ongoing collection of spare change for classroom piggy banks, an effort known on campus as “Change for Change.” Next came Friday morning “Coffee Carpools” in which donations were accepted in exchange for a free cup of hot, fresh coffee as parents dropped their students off at school. “Coffee Carpools” also gave participants the opportunity to buy bags of Singing Rooster Coffee, a delicious Haitian coffee available online at www.singingrooster.org.
In addition to “Change for Change” and “Coffee Carpools,” the Oak Hill community rallied together to fill 400 holiday stockings to be sent to St. Vincent’s School for Handicapped Children in Port au Prince. During her many visits on Oak Hill’s campus, Laurie States, liaison of the Dallas-Haiti Project, encouraged students to support the 2009 effort. She reminded them that, “The Haitian students look forward to receiving the stockings as a much-appreciated high point of their holiday season each year.” States was thrilled with the level of kindness and response The Giving Project received this year, and says she is overwhelmed by the capability of even the youngest students (age 3) for compassion and love of others.
Proceeds from these fundraising efforts go entirely to benefiting the people of Haiti. Coffee sales support micro-lending efforts, and all other monetary donations assist St. Vincent’s School in paying a minimum wage to its teachers.
