If you haven’t heard the name Kelly Brown or the phrase Local Honey, you may need to get out more to hear local music! Her sweet and sometimes gritty voice has been heard for years on stage at Lilith Fair, in countless commercials and movie soundtracks and venues across Dallas.
Although she will tell you she hates to be combo-compared ala, “Ella Fitzgerald meets alt-country singer Neko Case,” or, Sheryl Crow meets Doris Day,” or even, “Quincy Jones as played by Ann-Margret,” her vocals dooffer a perfectly percolated blend of smooth, bold and sweet (thus her industry nickname, Honey).
She has all the talent and creativity she needs to be a mad artist, but playing locally here in Dallas is home and where she is leading the diverse group of Dallas’ finest players in a wildly eclectic set of holiday favorites for Local Honey’s 4th Annual Holiday Mix!
Local Honey, is Brown’s vision of an art and entertainment entity that puts on multi-media shows free from the restrictions or pigeonholes often placed on artists by labels, galleries, publishers and other corporate entities. Brown has a tough time describing what, Local Honey is, “I had the idea some time ago, but didn’t really know how to explain it to anyone so I just started doing it hoping others would eventually get it… I still can’t quite explain it.”
Seeing is believing and for a fourth year, this unexplainable, performing ooze she calls, Local Honey, will perform on Saturday, Dec. 19 at the Lakewood Theater in East Dallas. Brown’s lineup this year includes several local stars: Big Brain Music’s MACK PRICE, D Drum’s JOHN BRYANT, Pianist WILLIAM FOLEY, Hochimen’s and Rueffer Brother’s REGGIE REUFFER and CHAD REUFFER, Heaven’s KIM BROWN CAIN, Freddie Jones Jazz Band’s FREDDIE JONES and Naked Lunch’s DAVE PREZ to name a few.
Weeks of coordinating schedules to practice in Brown’s Hollywood Heights living room and constructing some of Christmastime’s favorite pieces gives the neighbors a sneak, “peek,” at the complex yet simply, sweet sounding holiday tunes with that twist of honey!
Her partner in crime for the 4th year, accomplished neighborhood music producer Mack Price is musical director. Price and Brown choose songs, after which Price composes the arrangements; his description of Local Honey, “Imagine sort of a Broadway revue with: big band, alternative, country and western, classical! And all for a $15 ticket, most of which covers expenses and is given to local charities; none of the musicians make a dime but they return to accompany Brown year after year for the experience!
This year part of the proceeds will benefit Animal Alert!, the Little Forest Hills-based volunteer organization whose mission it is to reunite lost pets with their families (and to start an Animal Alert/ Pet Watch in EVERY neighborhood all connected via-e-database for e-Amber Alert-type alerts for lost/found pets!)
