40 McKinney ISD high school vocalists selected to All-Region Choirs

McKINNEY, Texas – Choir members from all three McKinney ISD high schools were recently selected to Texas Music Educators Region 25 All-Region Choirs during auditions held on Saturday, Oct. 10.
A total of 40 vocalists from McKinney Boyd High School, McKinney High School and McKinney North High School were named to the All-Region Choirs. Those students will rehearse and perform in concert on Saturday, Nov. 7, at McKinney North High School. Twenty-one of those selected now advance to the Pre-Area auditions to be held at Plano West Senior High on Tuesday, Nov. 17.
Vocalists were rated on their vocal performance of selected literature and their sight-reading ability demonstrated by accurately performing an eight-measure melody line after only a 30-second study period.
The Pre-Area audition is the second step in a multi-audition process for high school choir students striving to be named to one of the prestigious Texas All-State Choirs. Approximately 15,000 Texas high school student vocalists are involved in the audition process annually. Only the top 400 students in the state are selected to rehearse and perform as a member of the Texas All-State Choirs at the Texas Music Educators Conference slated for San Antonio in February of 2010.
“It takes talent, preparation and calm nerves to deliver under this kind of pressure,” said Steve Garms, McKinney High School Choir Director and lead choral director for the district. “It is a demanding process in which our students go ‘head to head’ against exceptional vocalists throughout the region. We are so proud of the individual work that our students exhibit throughout this audition process.”
The choral directors at McKinney High School are Steve Garms and Joe Tompkins. The choral directors at McKinney North High School are Steven Nelms. The choral directors at McKinney Boyd High School are Melissa Peden and Stephen Gusukuma.
Below is a list of the students from McKinney ISD high schools who auditioned and were selected to the Region 25 All-Region Choirs. An asterisk next to the student’s name indicates that the student advanced to Pre-Area competition to be held on November 17.
