Make a Difference Day in McKinney

2 Ratings / 3 Comments

Sheila Miller and Debbie Ragsdale along with about 150 volunteers participated at the Make a Difference Day Activities at the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Eldorado Parkway. This activity, sponsored by Volunteer McKinney brought together crafters, making cards for deployed servicemen and for seniors at nursing homes. Pillows were made for Hospice patients and other crafts were lovingly made by volunteers.

It was quite moving to see young girls making butterflies from coffee filters and teenage boys carrying heavy boxes, setting up chairs and tables and pitching in wherever needed. Fun and fancy cards were made to share with our soldiers far from home and the elderly who could use some cheering up during the holidays. I dropped off several of my hand-painted cards that were warmly accepted. When people complain about the younger generation, I'd like them to see the hard-working, caring young people that volunteer around McKinney all year long.

My second stop was Habitat For Humanity at 701 S. Tennessee where volunteers were building a playhouse for Habitat families. Volunteer Coordinator, Andrea Tabor, was sweeping up and running around while Greg Thornton, Bill Goin, and Troy Allam hammered and worked on the playhouse. The volunteers said they have been coming out every year for the past 5 years or so to "make a difference."

But my adventures continued. Going north to 600 N. Tennessee, I discovered the hidden treasure of Silver Threads Community Store. The store benefits the Collin County Committee on Aging which provides Meals on Wheels, C Cart and Caregiver Support. The facility accepts donations of many items including clothing, toys, furniture, books, jewelry and so much more that they sell for unbelievably low prices to the community. I managed to purchase a big shopping bag full of treasures. The coordinator, Cathy Jamison, was so charming and told me of the many activities their group sponsors. Last year they were able to provide 600 gifts to needy families at Christmas time. They have a handful of delightful volunteers who would be thrilled to receive your donations. They are open Monday-Saturday from 9-5. Stop by and check it out.

On my way home, I stopped at Concordia Christian Academy on Virginia. They were having their Fall Festival that was open and free to the public. They had bounce houses, barrel train rides, games, food, and prizes. Children were scurrying around winning little toys, getting their faces painted and eating hot dogs and just having the greatest time. It is just so fantastic that the schools, churches and businesses in McKinney are so generous and giving. They make everyone feel welcome and make McKinney the greatest place to live.

Needless to say, when I got home, I put my feet up a while and just reflected on the great day and the wonderful people in McKinney that really "MAKE A DIFFERENCE."
