Mesquite man proves America's Got Talent

4 Ratings / 4 Comments

Thanks to some inside connections at The Dallas Morning News, I got to spend Monday morning with America’s Got Talent winner, Mesquite’s own Terry Fator, at KRLD News Radio during the Ernie and Jay Midday show.

The amazing ventriloquist was extremely nice, down-to-earth and has a great story.

“I’ve been doing ventriloquism since I was 10 years old,” Fator said. “I’ve been dreaming about this all my life.”

The thing he’s been dreaming about is headlining his own show, and thanks to America's Got Talent, that’s exactly what he’ll be doing in the entertainment capitol of the nation, Las Vegas.

“I’ve always wanted to see a billboard of mine in Vegas, not for egotistical reasons, but for the fact that I am excited for people to see what I do.”

Unlike other acts in Sin City, Dallas-born Fator is sticking to family-friendly entertainment. He’s happy to be a family act in Vegas and looks forward to them returning to check out his act year after year as the families grow.

“For America’s Got Talent, I left nothing to chance,” Fator said. “I thought if I’m only on here for three episodes, I have to show people what I can do. What you saw on the show is only a minute-and-a-half of material — the Vegas shows are going to be more than an hour.”

For Fator, getting a headline show was the ultimate, but on top of that, he also won the grand prize of $1 million. He says that winning the money set in when he and his wife drove past a car dealership and saw a car she had always wanted — only this time, the car was something she can have now.    Things have come a long way since his first paid gig years ago.

“I remember getting my first check July 4, 1976 for $25 after I entertained a crowd with my ventriloquist act,” Fator said. “I was just thinking, 'I can get paid for doing this?'”

Fator hopes that winning AGT will raise the bar of ventriloquists. He has a laid-back type of personality, but when it comes to his ventriloquism — it’s down to business. Some characters take years to develop, while others, such as the popular Winston the turtle, formulate instantly.

“I have more than 100 voices,” Fator said. “If I want to learn how to do a voice — I work at it for however long it takes.”

After starting out a bit discouraged on the show when judge David Hasselhoff called him “just another ventriloquist,” Fator is about to show Las Vegas what he can do. And to that, he says the stars really aligned for this.

“When I’m onstage — I’m the closest thing to being in heaven itself.”
