Rock and Roll Legend & Friends Revive Old Town Mesquite with Music

1 Rating / 1 Comment
Old town, downtown Mesquite, Texas in the 1940s was the cultural center of the region with roots music pouring from the town square every Saturday night. Today, after decades of pedestrian and commercial decline, few residents of this eastern Dallas suburb even know Mesquite has a downtown, much less know its colorful history. Enter Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, almost 89-year-old Dave Bartholomew, who throughout the summer of 2009, is rocking old town Mesquite with music like it's never heard before. As a favor to his friend and protege, Larry "T-Byrd" Gordon, popular Texas show band leader and husband of Balch Springs, Texas' new "Singing Mayor", Carrie Gordon--- Mr. Bartholomew is joining forces with T-Byrd's band and Mesquite's Art Greenhaw of The Light Crust Doughboys to revitalize old town Mesquite into a musical destination center, an artists' square. Every other Saturday night throughout the summer, T-Byrd's variety revue combines with Art's Doughboys' sounds and
style which further combine with classic Dave Bartholomew hits known 'round the world like "I'm Walkin' ", "One Night (of Sin)", "Witchcraft", "Ain't That A Shame" and more. As more historical background, Mr. Bartholomew produced and arranged what many people claim
is the very first rock and roll record, 1949's " The Fat Man" starring Fats Domino. And Mr. Bartholomew's famous trumpet playing is due in part to his trumpet study with the man who also taught Louis Armstrong trumpet.

Says Art, in whose 4th generation family building in old town Mesquite the performances are held: "We've been working for years and years to produce music and arts so outstanding that people would head out to old town Mesquite as a destination location, and the downtown square would become a major cutural district and artists' square. Thanks to the legacy and vision of Dave Bartholomew and Larry "T-Byrd" Gordon combined with our Texas Light Crust Doughboys' vibe, we've found the catalyst that will light the fire to revive 'professional live music' in east Dallas-Mesquite-Balch Springs. Go tell it on the mountain: the best of r&b is back, and it's every other week in Mesquite, Texas."
