“I plan to be the eBay of ebook sales,” she said.
In April, Chavez launched ebooKarma, a full-service ebook publishing business, right out of her own home. The online company now has a growing list of clients and boasts a selection of ebooks ranging in topics from “business and finance” to “spirituality and religion” to “health and living.”
A writer and stay-at-home mom of two, Chavez wasn’t deterred by the current state of the nation’s economy when she decided to start her own ebook business. In fact, she sees it as a formula for success for those who seek to become financially independent.
“I’ve heard that if you can make a business work in a down economy, it will be one of the only ones standing when consumers start spending again,” she said. “I figured if I can make this work now, it will thrive.”
Chavez’s daily schedule stays full so she starts her day around 4:30 or 5 a.m., when her family is still in bed. She encourages other moms that have an entrepreneurial spirit and a full load at home to find their passion and figure out a way to make money at it.
“I chose to enter the publishing field because it is so very, very difficult for writers to get a book published nowadays,” she said. “I have writing in my soul, and so do so many other people. We need a viable outlet to get our work out to the world.”
With industry giants such as Amazon.com and its popular Kindle product for ebook storage dominating the digital literary scene, Chavez believes going back to the basics will help secure her start-up company’s presence and eventually make it a solid competitor.
“I really love the name [ebooKarma] because it encompasses how I do business. I always put the author first, and do my very best to make them happy and to over-deliver on what they expect,” she said. “I figure if I focus on that, good things will come my way, too.”
