Project Transfomation Intern Recognized

During worship services on Father’s Day, June 21st at Christ United Methodist Church, Farmers Branch, Joe Bowles reported on Project Transformation (PT). Bowles reported that during the PT reading program at Walnut Hill UMC (WHUMC) June 15-18, CUMC had thirty-three volunteers who spent ninety hours reading to children. He then introduced David Windler, this year’s PT intern sponsored by CUMC.

David Windler introduced himself and gave a testimony to the joy and satisfaction of working with Project Transformation. Windler is a medical student at Baylor University. This is his second year working with PT. He was an incoming intern last year, assisting with the reading program at WHUMC. This year he is a site coordinator - "a completely different job" - with more responsibilities, such as helping to train the reading volunteers.

Windler reported that Project Transformation has thirty-eight university students from twenty states volunteering in the Dallas area with interns at nine different sites, serving 800 youth each summer. He then relayed that he had thought, when traveling to Dallas for PT, that the children from last year would probably not remember him. He would discover that he was mistaken.

During the reading program, Windler had been affected by the germs which are passed around when living in close proximity to a varied group of people. On one particular day, when he was under the weather and feeling none too perky, he was approached by two girls who presented him with a sack. Opening the sack, he pulled out a card which had pictures of the three of them pasted inside.

The intern reached back into the sack and found a cap with a big T on it. He asked the two girls what the gifts were for. They explained that he had not been feeling well and they wanted to help him get better. They had tried to find a cap that said North Dakota, but there were none to be found. The only time David Windler had mentioned he was from North Dakota was when he introduced himself to the youth last year!

David Windler’s testimony underscored the valuable effect that Project Transformation has on the youth of Dallas who need education and help to improve their lives. The congregation of CUMC is proud to sponsor an intern each year and Windler’s message of inspiration and appreciation illustrated the reason.
