Celebrating 121 Dresses

1 Rating / 0 Comments

Young girls and women of the Flower Mound 2nd Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently exceeded their expectation of donating 100 dresses to benefit The Advocacy and Pregnancy Center of Lewisville by donating 121 dresses.  These young women and girls collected dresses of all sizes and styles and delivered them to women who may be experiencing a crisis related to their pregnancy as well as women who may be struggling to make ends meet.

The goal of 100 new or gently used dresses came from the book “The Hundred Dresses” by Eleanor Estes.  The book’s theme is about compassion for others and is told from a young girl’s perspective.  It encourages girls and women to never stand by when someone is being picked on, but to take the opportunity to care and befriend others.

Jessica Packer, age 12, who reached her goal of donating 20 dresses said, “I wanted to give a large number of dresses because I know there is a real need for them.”  Hailey Cluff, also12, said “I wanted to give some of my own dresses to someone else who might really need them.”

Knowing how a new dress can brighten someone’s day, Kendall Semones, Jessica Hulse, and Rachael Horikami participated in the opportunity to bring dresses to the service project. These teens have learned that happiness comes from serving and loving others. Rachel, a student at ForestWoodMiddle School, spoke for the group when she said, “Service helps other people and makes you feel good while you’re at it.”

For members of the LDSChurch serving others is part of their desire to be like Christ.  Flower Mound resident Mary Johnson, who helped organize the service project said, “We all have the bond of being daughters of God and when we remember that, I think it makes us want to be kinder and help each other.”
