Singers Place at Balch Springs Idol

Ten young singers competed for three top prizes in the 2009 Balch Springs Idol, sponsored by the Balch Springs Visual and Performing Arts Alliance. Top winners were: Jesika Emanuel – first place; Megan Shipman – second place; and Fredrick Henderson – third place. Singers competed over three weekends in May and June. Each singer was given a written critique from the judges, a certificate for participating and a promise of additional performances throughout the next year.

Judges included Dr. T-Byrd Gordon, Grammy nominee and internationally-known musician. Charla Harris, dancer and TV sitcom writer; Esaul Hernandez, account executive with Dallas County WCID #6; and Sandra Bellamy Wood, performer, instructor and musical director. Alvester Gibson, served as emcee for all three competitions Mr. Gibson was involved with the Texarkana Idol.

Special guests included: Larry Gordon, Jr. and Dave Bartholomew. ‘Lil Larry’ Gordon, R&B artist, is currently signed to a two-year contract with Curb Records in Nashville. Dave Barthoolomew was inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame for his work with Fats Domino and other recording stars in the fifities.

Arts Alliance programs also include performance classes, music theatre workshops, instrumental/songwriting seminars, art gallery showings and a continuation of the Dr. Larry “T-Byrd” Gordon Cultural Art Series started in June 2007.
