If shopping from a carefully-edited closet comprised of clothing from Dallas' well-heeled women sounds good to you, then look no further.
Since the 1970s, Clotheshorse Anonymous has been satisfying the cravings of local shoppers with an allegiance to looking good and a love of the dig for designer and one-of-a-kind pieces to add to their wardrobes.
In 1974 former Braniff stewardess Jan Kennedy ditched her Pucci uniform to open the store with friend and fellow Braniff employee, Nancy Ungerman.
“I was a bored housewife, I was truly a ‘Desperate Housewife,’” Kennedy said with a trademark laugh; her humor has inadvertently doubled as a marketing tool for decades. “I loved clothes and wanted to do something more. Dallas has some of the most impeccably dressed women in the world; I wanted to bring that to my customers.”
Enter a consignment shop that accepts only names you’d stumble over in Vogue. Recent finds include wares from Chanel, Bottega Veneta, Henry Beguelin, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, Marni, Chloe and Dries Van Noten.
For sales associate Kar Garfield, the proof is in the pudding. The competition is fierce as loyal customers show up as doors first open to get first dibs on new merchandise.
“One of our clients is always coming in first thing to find great jewelry and gold, and we have many others who look for a particular designer,” Garfield said. “I always tell them, ‘Get it fast, because tomorrow it will probably be gone.’”
But to Kennedy, it’s not just the collectors but the entire client base that benefits from the consignors recycling covetable clothes.
“It’s really about self-confidence; it’s the quickest way to feeling better about yourself for that job interview or bad day,” Kennedy said. “We love to provide that boost; we’re like a family here.”
