For many Park Cities residents, walking into Apples to Zinnias to pick up a floral arrangement is like stepping into an urban oasis. And it’s no mistake; the shop’s lush atmosphere has been honed since opening in 1984, first located in the Oak Lawn area, then relocating to its current Plaza at Preston Center home.
When owner Karen Akin took over in the mid-nineties, she used her experience as a women’s clothing executive to build the business.
The boutique handles events, parties and seasonal decorating and boasts a varied inventory of gourmet food items and gifts; empty-nesters are often known to stop in for a Texas Longhorn crafted from greenery for a child departing for college.
Akin believes it is because the staff spares no length in addressing what a customer wants that keeps a loyal clientele.
“Each arrangement is custom; we don’t do recipes,” Akin said. “Our customers love that because they know it will be tasteful and unique.”
Another priority of the shop is its philanthropic efforts. Akin is active with Dallas Social Venture Partners and numerous other organizations.
On June 5, Akin hosted a bone-marrow drive and balloon release in honor of the second birthday of her grandson, Andrew, who suffers from HLH disease. Dozens of customers and community members turned out in support.
“It is when you give of your own gifts that you live a rich full, life,” Akin said. “I am so very blessed, and it’s so important to give back.”
