We invited Amanda Bumgarner, communications assistant for the church, to tell us more about Custer Road UMC.
- What do you think this award says about your church? Our worship services combine elements of the traditional and contemporary. The music spans from pieces written centuries ago to pieces you may hear on a Christian radio station. Our youth choir is well-known and loved throughout the country, and our ministers provide solid, biblical lessons every week.
- What is the most important thing (or two) for our readers to know about Custer Road UMC?We are an official welcoming church through the United Methodist Church conference. There are programs for everyone of all ages and stages of life, whether a newcomer wants to participate in missions, music, children’s and student ministries, congregational care and support groups, special needs, administration or just a simple Sunday school or Bible study.
- Tell us a little about the history of Custer Road UMC and how long it has been in Plano.Custer Road UMC began as a modest church of 246 congregants in February 10, 1980, taking shelter from the hazards of ice and snow in ThomasElementary School. It took another three years before we settled on our present campus at 6601 Custer Road. Since then, we have continued to expand our facilities with a new sanctuary in 1990, the Upper Room, ChristianDay School and extra classrooms in 2001. We now have a congregation of more than 7,000 members, and we have moved from one worship service to three.
