Madeline Exhibit Extended to July 11

“In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines….The smallest one was Madeline.”

In 1939 those words introduced American children to an adventuresome, red-haired French girl who won their hearts and admiration and continues to do so today.

Ludwig Bemelmans’ first children’s book in what became a series was simply titled Madeline. In the book the heroine, the smallest of twelve young girls in a Paris boarding school, is faced with an attack of appendicitis. Madeline was a spunky little girl, and that’s what made her such an appealing role model. Madeline gave young girls the courage to speak their mind and showed them that there was nothing unfeminine about being smart and strong.

Over 10 million Madeline books have been sold worldwide, earning the books a place in publishing history as classics in children’s literature. Madeline dolls and toys have extended the fun and creativity which she inspires in all who have fallen under her charm. Full-length movies based on the books about Madeline and her friends can be checked out of the library with a Balch Springs library card, subject to availability.

The exhibit of Madeline books, toys, and dolls is part of the Dr. Larry "T-Byrd" Gordon Cultural Art Series held at the Balch Springs Library-Learning Center, 12450 Elam Rd., Balch Springs, Texas. Center hours are Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
