Dallas Skyline Volleyball Club’s 14 RoShamBo team returned from Atlanta this past weekend victorious, having won the Big South Junior Olympic National Qualifier Tournament in the 14 Open division. Big South is one of only 10 Junior Olympic (JO) Qualifiers around the country. The girls had previously qualified for the Junior Olympics to be held in Miami this July, by finishing 3rd in the Colorado Crossroads JO Qualifier held in March.
In winning the Big South tournament, the girls defeated some of the best volleyball teams in the country including St. Louis CYC (the 2008 13U Junior Olympic national champion), Orlando Volleyball Assoc. (the #1 ranked team in Florida), A5 (the #1 ranked team in Georgia), Richmond Juniors (the #1 ranked team in Virginia), Austin Juniors, and Texas Advantage. The girl’s record is 41-5 thus far in the 2008-2009 season and they are ranked #1 in the North Texas Region, looking to maintain a 3 year run as the top team for their age group in all of Texas. Next up for the team is the Lone Star JO Qualifier April 17-19 at the Dallas Convention Center, where they are the defending champions from the past two years.
The team is led by head coach Jason Williams and assistant coach Lisa Larwa. The girls attend junior highs in Coppell, Carrollton, Richardson, and Plano ISDs. Four of the girls have been on the Skyline RoShamBo team since they began at 12U. Last year at 13U, the girls finished 5th in the country at the AAU Nationals and 9th in the country at the Junior Olympic Nationals. This year at Nationals in Miami, the team looks to finish even higher.
