Free Throw Champs Determined
Winners were selected Saturday in the annual Knights of Columbus Youth Free Throw Challenge conducted by St. Philip the Apostle Council 9884. Each participant shot 15 free throws for score. The annual competition included students in the Lewisville, Flower Mound, Highland Village, Copper Canyon, Double Oak and Lake Dallas communities.
The winners, by age group, were as follows:
In the Girls category:
Age 10, Bethany Capps, Forest Vista Elementary School
Age 11, Emily Witt, Wellington Elementary School
Age 12, Alex Giuffreda, McKamy Middle School
Age 13, Kylie Capps, Forestwood Middle School
In the Boys category,
Age 10, Joshua Grant, Garden Ridge Elementary School
Age 11, Colton Courty, McAullife Elementary School
Age 12, Travis Spinney, Durham Middle School
Age 13, Bailey Domenech, Lamar Middle School
Age 14, Taylor Johnson, Flower Mound High School
Taylor Johnson, the 2008 Age 13 International Champion, shot a perfect score of 15 of 15 to win the age 14 category. Two age groups had to resort to tie-breakers. Colton Courty defeated Truman Coe III in a shoot-out for the age 11 title, while Zach Williams lost out to Bailey Domenech at the 13-yr.-old level.
Local winners will now compete on the district level in Grapevine at 12:30 on Saturday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church for a chance to advance to the Ft. Worth diocesan competition at UNT in Denton on Saturday, February 14. Those winners will later compete at the state level in San Antonio.
The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic family fraternal service organization with more than 1.7 million members in more than 12,500 local councils. Last year, Knights donated 60 million volunteer hours and $130 million to charitable and benevolent causes, sponsoring projects to benefit their church, councils, communities, families and youth.
