Frisco Family Services Starts A Community Garden

0 Ratings / 0 Comments
Frisco Family Services Center in partnership with the City of Frisco, is establishing a community garden to promote community involvement and provide fresh fruits and vegetables to the clients of our agency. The idea of a community garden originated with Pippa Couvillion, Environmental Services Manager for the City of Frisco. Jill Cumnock, Executive Director was participating in the leadership Frisco Class in 2004 when Pippa suggested that a community garden would be a great class project. Although, the project was not selected, Jill never gave up the hope that there would be a community garden that would serve the needs of agency's clients and more. The community garden will be located at First Street and Ash Drive in downtown Historic Frisco on a quarter acre of land adjacent to a city park. The city has graciously allowed us to utilize this land and has also assisted by installing five no-freeze water faucets that will be used for watering the garden beds. Ryan J. Middleton, a Planner with the Comprehensive & Environmental Division of the Planning & Development Services for the City of Frisco, "has provided the knowledge, expertise and motivation needed to move forward with this new and exciting project", stated Jill Cumnock. Other strong supporters of the community garden include Rodman Excavation Inc. who donated mulch and garden soil. FFSC is currently soliciting donations from individuals and area businesses for a garden shed, tools, supplies and financial support. As a donor, you will receive community wide recognition while making a difference every day in the lives of individuals, families and seniors we serve.

FFSC is also looking for volunteers that are gardeners or individuals who are interested in learning more about gardening and would like to beautify the neighborhood, build community, in addition to feeding the hungry. The garden plot, water, access to tools, mulch, compost, gardening information along with a selection of seeds will be provided. The garden will be built, maintained and harvested by volunteers of FFSC. To participate, gardeners must complete a registration packet and pay an annual non-refundable $20.00 fee per raised-garden bed. We are planning for a Spring harvest. For more information about becoming a member or donating contact Carrie at 972-335-9495 or carrie@friscocenter.org.
