In December, Mohawk Elementary joined with a local bookstore to launch a new community event called Mohawk Elementary Live at Barnes & Noble.  Designed as an interactive, fund-raising event, this new tradition engaged the kids, families and support groups of Mohawk Elementary.

Mohawk Library Media Specialist, DeeAnn Douglas, worked with David Hess, the Community Relations Manager at Barnes and Noble (Monfort & Beltline) to put together the program featuring a day and evening of fun and entertainment for the children and families of the Mohawk community.

Working different shifts throughout the day, Mohawk parents, the Beta Club, the CHIEFS organization and Student Council members volunteered their time to provide free gift wrapping and hand out bookmarks made by the kids of Mohawk.

The crowning feature of the event was “live” entertainment during the evening for families and customers to enjoy. A wide variety ofentertainment took place throughout the store, including student poetry readings in the café of original and published poems, roving musicians, and music provided by the 6th grade band and North Junior High Orchestra. Many teachers read stories to the children and Mohawk Principal, Billie Snow read the children her favorite bedtime story.

Another highlight was a puppet show put on by published author, Laurel Lavokalakis from the Richardson Public Library. In addition,third-grade “book characters” decked out in full costume roamed the store. Inattendance were: Kit Kittredge and her best friend Ruthie, Edward Cullen, Dorothy and the Tin Man, Harry Potter, Cindy Lou Who, Fancy Nancy, Indiana Jones and manymore.

It was a great night for the kids, families and faculty of Mohawk, but the best part of this venture was the community partnership that took place between the Mohawk community and Barnes & Noble.  During the event, Barnes & Noble donated 20% of all store sales where customers mentioned Mohawk at check out towards books for the Mohawk library. The event resulted in over 100  books being added to the Mohawk library’s collection.

David Hess, B & N Community Relations Manager said, “to say this was fun and successful is an understatement. From our perspective, it was a pleasure to host this event and the welcome mat will always be out toMohawk.”

Thanks to Barnes & Noble and DeeAnn Douglas for organizing a fun, successful event that the entire Mohawk community can look forward to annually. A special note of appreciation for the help and support during this event goes out to the CHIEFS organization, a dynamic community-based group dedicated to helping the local schools, neighbors and neighborhood.
