Sleeping-in was not in the cards for Girl Scout Troop 90 from Christ the King School! On Saturday January 10th, Troop 90 lent a helping hand to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society Thrift Store. The girls commenced their day with a tour of the thrift store warehouse, met with a member of the Society to better understand the St. Vincent de Paul mission and the plight of those it serves. Then it was off to work – the girls were quickly put to work restocking shelves, organizing the store’s library and sorting clothing items. Christ the King mom, Lisa Muck whose daughter Alexandra participated in the service outing noted, “The 5th grade girls were exceptionally moved by the mission of the Society. At the conclusion of the service outing, many Troop members expressed an interest in volunteering again.”
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a Catholic charity which provides tangible assistance to those in need on a person-to-person basis regardless of religious affiliation. Since its inception, the 26,000 square foot store continues to provide clothes, furniture and household items to the Dallas community, as well as, outreach programs and services which promote self-sufficiency and empower the needy. These outreach programs include English as a Second Language (ESL), vocational training, immunizations, Back to School programs, Dress for Success seminars and the Voucher Program which allows the neediest customers to shop for free.
All proceeds from the store fund the local Vincentian mission which focuses its efforts within the Dallas community. Please visit the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift store located at 3052 Northwest Highway Dallas, Texas 75220 (214) 373-SVDP.
