Pantry Makes Hearts Sing

0 Ratings / 0 Comments

This is the busiest time of the year at Cedar Hill Food Pantry. The way the volunteers are hurrying and scurrying, one is definitely reminded of Santa’s workshop.

“We are so blessed,” said Gene Sims, Executive Director. “Cedar Hill is such a wonderful community. For the 5th year in a row the Trinity Church & School provided Thanksgiving dinners for over 200 families. The Food Pantry fed 585 individuals plus  complete Thanksgiving meals the week before Thanksgiving. Members of  FirstBaptistChurch, Cedar Hill are delivering contents for 250 Christmas dinners as I am typing.”

Putting food into hungry mouths is the raison d’être for the Food Pantry.  In a way, we are in the people pleasing business. Anything that would make your heart feel better usually makes others feel better. The soul of the organization is the network of donors and volunteers. Contributions of hands-on volunteer time, creating a smile on a face of our clients, and knowing the person is not going to bed hungry is what it is all about and is as important as the cash and canned goods. We need both food and money. Our number of individuals has increased approximately 100 per month for the past four months. We are currently feeding over 500 individuals every week.

Unfortunately, it is not just this time of the year that we need help. People open their hearts at Christmas, but our clients need help all year long. Today, as I type this article, the shelves are pretty full. What is on the shelves tomorrow and the day after and the day after that is what concerns me. It truly depends on the hour of the day and the day of the week that determines our needs.

Cedar Hill Food Pantry services residents living within the CHISD.  We are a stand alone, temporary agency operating completely on donations of money of food. Once qualified, the client may pick up food twice a month or 6 months, which ever comes first. This gives them time to get back on their feet .

The pantry is open Mon. & Wed. 1:00pm – 4:00pm, Fri. 9:00 – 12:00, and 10:00am – 1:00pm on Sat. If you would like to be a part of the Cedar Hill Food Pantry family of volunteers, please call 972-293-2822 and make your heart sing.
