HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS VISIT BALCH SPRINGS.
Two Holocaust survivors, William and Rosalie Schiff
spoke at the Balch Springs Civic Center on
Nov. 22 to a standing room only crowd. These two
Polish Jews shared their experiences of living,
enduring and surviving six different German slave
and prison camps from 1941 until their rescue
in 1945. Now in their 80"s, William and Rosalie
speak so that the Holocaust and the
extermination of over six million Jews will not
be forgotten. Their highly effective
campaign is a heroic culmination of two
lives scared beyond belief by
racism. These survivors combine history with the
timely lesson on the
nature of mass hate, prejudice and discrimination,
a lesson from which
they feel all can learn..
This history learning experience was attended by
Ms. Baker's A.C. New Middle School's 8th grade
students who are at this time studying the
Holocaust. The posters and exhibits shown are
examples of projects
submitted by these students. They were very in-depth
for scholars of this age and showed a real feeling for
this period of history. Also in attendance were
students from West Mesquite's Honors English and History program,
Balch Springs and Mesquite residents and teachers.
The event was under the direction of the Balch Springs
library director, Sandra Gallion. The library staff and
library board served refreshments, acted as host
and made sure all students attending for credit
received their credit slips.
The speakers were sponsored by the Friends of the
Balch Springs Library.
