ABOUT TIME SAILS AGAIN IN GEORGE GRIFFITH REGATTA

It’s ABOUT TIME!  While cruising in the Virgin Islands this summer, Cameron and Marie Chandler finally decided on a name for the 1976 San Juan 24 sailboat that they bought in 1985.  This trip also rekindled their love for sailing and rememberd the boat that they had neglected for so long.  In the late 80’s and early 90’s they had daysailed and raced the boat a little; Cameron proposed to Marie on it.   But work and other family obligations forced them to put it in dry dock for over 10 years;  but instead of selling it, they kept it, intending to start daysailing and racing it again when the time was right,.  When they first bought the boat, they never could decide on a good name, so it was never named.
They returned to Heath to begin rejuvenating the boat, realizing that they could continue to sail on Lake Ray Hubbard while they were in Heath. Restoration became a club-wide project.  Jeff Progelhof,  regatta chairman, urged them to use the fall George Griffith regatta as their goal for finishing the boat.   Jeff also helped them clean up some of the rigging; the hull was redone by Greg Olsen; Marie and Kerri Cunningham (who had also agreed to crew with Cameron)  helped clean the topsides and toss out all the non-racing gear that had been stored inside the boat while it was being used as a garage and countless others lent moral and physical..
Rush Creek Yacht Club’s annual  George Griffith Regatta  was a charity event that raised over $6,000, canned goods and used clothing for Rockwall County Helping Hands.  Funds were raised through corporate and private donations, auction of Olympic Sailor Paul Foerster to sail on a boat for a day, and regatta entry fees.  Over 20 boats participated, with many other yacht club members being involved in on-shore activities.
Olympic sailor Paul Foerster had offered to sail with the highest bidder, with funds going to Helping Hands .  At the skippers meeting, another club member bid for Paul to crew for  Cameron.   Paul had never sailed on a SJ24, but was able to help Cameron win his fleet and give him some tips for sailing ABOUT TIME.

At the trophy presentation, Cameron was as excited as a youth sailor winning his first trophy.  But he was also excited that the boat was ready to sail again.  It’s ABOUT TIME.
