A Sweet Homecoming

Home after a year in Iraq, Mr. Johnson made a surprise visit to his son DJ in Mrs. Spoerl-Golden’s 2nd grade class at McKenzie Elementary. Mr. Johnson is a member of the US Navy and has been stationed in Iraq and had not seen his son DJ since September 2007. On September 30, 2008, Mr. Johnson made a heart-warming surprise as he entered the classroom. It was very emotional to see and feel the love between this father and son. Our class has recently been studying about heroes and their importance. Our class has decided to take on a care project: Adopt a Soldier. Together the students will write letters and prepare care packages to send overseas to their hero’s. Mr. Johnson was such an inspiration to all of my students. He opened up as he let the students ask questions related to his duties overseas. As the students continued to ask questions, his son DJ stared up at him with a never ending smile and said, "I love my daddy." Mr. Johnson also asked the students questions about the importance of their education. He reminded them to always do their best because their education is very important. Even though Mr. Johnson will only be at home for a week before he must return to Iraq, the love, encouragement, and support for his son will continue on. Story by Jeri Spoerl-Golden
