Cub Scouts Drive In School Supplies

2 Ratings / 2 Comments

With gas prices fluctuating around $4.oo a gallon, more and more families are finding themselves in a position where they are unable to provide some simple necessities, such as school supplies for their children. With that in mind, the 1st thru 5th grade members of Cub Scout Pack 126 backed out Summer early and drove in the approaching school year by assembling starter school supply kits for needy kids in the Desoto/Glenn Heights areas.

Pack 126 needed to know where to go to find needy families in the community, so they contacted the Brighter Tomorrows Thrift Store in Desoto (formerly Desoto Outreach Center). The goal of this store is to raise operating money and provide household goods for needy clients in the Desoto and Glenn Heights areas. This store also provides food pantry and utility assistance to people in the community.

The volunteers and workers at the Thrift Store agreed to supply the names and grades of their needy clients, and with the joint efforts of the Cub Scouts, 100 school supply kits were assembled for grades K-5. These kits were distributed during the Scout’s School Supply Drive which took place on Saturday, August 2nd at Brighter Tomorrows Thrift Shop.

“We see the drive as just one more way we can make an important contribution to our community,” the Scouts say.

The parents of the Cub Scouts agree that equipping students with school supplies helps to build confidence and self-esteem. It also helps to ease a child’s mind when they know that they are prepared on the very first day of school.

“Our aim is to lighten the parents’ pockets, as well as, allow them to focus more on purchasing school clothes and grade-specific school supply items,” the parents explain.

Nearly 1, 000 items were packed in the kits, which contained crayons, glue, notebooks, pencils, pens, rulers and other typical back-to-school items.

The scouts of Pack 126 would like to extend a sincere Thank You to DeJoyce Morgan, DeDe Campbell, and all of the other employees and volunteers of Brighter Tomorrows who helped make this drive a huge success.
