Former WNBA Star now gunning for her First Football Title
Former WNBA player Umeeka Webb is taking her athletic career to new heights this weekend. As a Wide Receiver for the Dallas Diamonds Women’s Professional Football team, Webb will play in the IWFL National Championship Game. “I have always been a fan of football. The transition from basketball to football as been thrilling, so playing for the Championship Title is an incredible feeling.“
Playing college basketball at North CarolinaStateUniversity, Webb went on to play for four years in the WNBA. She spent two years with the Phoenix Mercury and two years with the Miami Sol. “I have gotten a chance to play overseas and been a part of some wonderful teams and organizations,” says Webb. “I have played for some great coaches as well Cheryl Miller, Hall of Fame Coach Kay Yow and Gold Medalist Coach Neil Fortner.”
Head Coach Todd Hughes says Webb and the Diamonds are in for a tough game, “Chicago is well coached and has a strong Defense that matches up well with our Offense. They have a talented team. We are the underdogs in this game but we are used to it. When we won our last three Championships everyone always stated we were the underdogs and that we didn’t play strong teams during the season or that we couldn’t play with teams from the East. We just get used to the talk.” Hughes says Dallas will be ready for this Eastern Conference Team. “After the Seattle game, I was very pleased with the progression of our passing game over the season and we intend to open it up on Chicago’s secondary.”
You may be surprised to know the Dallas Diamonds are most successful professional sports franchise in Texas in the 21st Century. With three World Championship titles (O4’, O5’, 06’) since their inception in 2002, the women of the gridiron are on a quest for a 4th.
