The DBU Baseball Team was honored by the City of Frisco on Tuesday, July 15, for the successful season they had on the baseball diamond during the 2008 season. The Mayor of Frisco, Maher Maso, at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, proclaimed July 15, 2008 as "Dallas Baptist University Patriots Baseball Team Day."
The 2008 Patriots baseball team played one of the nation’s toughest schedules and often played the best teams on the road or at a neutral site. DBU held there own, recording five victories against Top 25 teams and finishing the regular season 37-17.
The DBU Patriots impressive season earned them a berth to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history and they were only in their third year of full-fledged NCAA Division I play. The Patriots were also the first independent team to make the NCAA tournament since 1992.
This was the DBU Patriots 30th consecutive winning season, and the program has produced more than 10 major leaguers, including Lew Ford, Jason LaRue, and Ben Zobrist. DBU as a former NAIA powerhouse went 44-16 in its first year of provisional NCAA Division I play in 2004.
"The DBU Patriot Baseball team is honored to receive the proclamation from the City of Frisco . We are extremely grateful for the partnership between Dallas Baptist University and the City of Frisco. The Patriot Baseball team is thrilled to be able to share our success with the people of Frisco and hope it continues for years to come," Ryan Erwin, Director of Athletics said.
