Lancaster Rotary Club passes gavel and tomato

The Lancaster Rotary Club recently had a change in leadership when Roy Cormier took over as president, replacing Karen McClary who served as president last year.  Cormier is a retired Air Force Colonel whose last assignment in the military was as Inspector General for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service in Dallas.  Subsequent to his military retirement, Cormier owned and operated three Lawn Doctor lawn care franchises

in southern DallasCounty and in EllisCounty from a Lancaster operating location.  He is married to the former Frances DeFreitas of Georgetown, Guyana.

McClary, a financial advisor with Edward Jones in Lancaster, is proud of the service given to the Lancaster community by the club during the past year.  She cited support of the OutreachCenter and the various youth projects as especially meaningful.   Among the youth projects were scholarships for High School seniors,  sponsorship of two high school juniors to a week long leadership camp,  working with three other Rotary clubs in greater southwest DallasCounty to host a leadership training day for 20 students from each of the schools, sponsoring the Lancaster youth baseball program in 2007, working with the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce in promoting the Best Southwest Scholars program for LancasterHigh School.  Club members contributed over $1800 to Rotary

International’s efforts to eliminate polio in the world and to provide clean water to areas in third world countries.  One of the club members, Vernon Scott, helped deliver wheelchairs to needy persons in Peru.  As a service to the community and a fund raiser,  club members displayed approximately 300 flags in front of  businesses and residences on five legal holidays during the year.

Cormier is seeking to increase the club’s membership in 2008-2009.  Additional members means we can do more as a service organization, says Cormier.
