Recycling in The Colony Makes Dollars and Sense!
The recycling rebate has been adding up!Since June of 2007, The Colony has received over $125,000.00 in recycling rebates from Allied Waste Disposal. This equates to $12.02 given back to each The Colony resident over the last 12 months. This rebate has helped to offset approximately 46% of the monthly cost of The Colony recycling program.Participation in the Recycling Program has grown from 48% to an average of 61% during the last 12 months. The average pounds recycled per resident went from 8.6 to 14.3 per month. In total, The Colony residents have recycled approximately 3,000 tons of materials over the last year.
We applaud The Colony residents for doing such a great job recycling! This success is due to the efforts of a large percent of residents that recycle each and every week. To keep the Recycling Program in the City growing and continuing to generate larger recycling rebates, residents must also keep the materials that are put into the recycling containers as clean as possible.Along with the growth in participation and average pounds of recyclables collected per resident per month, there has been a steady increase in the amount of contamination found in the recyclables. In the future, the total rebate based on amounts collected will be reduced by the amount of contamination present. To help minimize the contamination in the recyclables, please observe the following guidelines as found in your recycling brochure:1)All paper items must be free of food or toxic contamination.2)All food and beverage cans must be empty and rinsed clean.3)Remove caps and lids from plastic containers and discard.4)Do not put household trash in the recycling.5)Do not put plastic bags in the recycling.6)Do not put grass clipping, brush or limbs in the Recycling.7)Do not put tires, batteries, paints or hazardous waste in the Recycling.8)Do not put auto/window glass, ceramics, china, light bulbs or Styrofoam in the Recycling.9)Do not put plastic toys, waxed paper/food containers or aluminum foil in the recycling.
