Summer Showtime ’08 – Campers Rock to 1980’s Pops with PWSH Choir

1 Rating / 0 Comments
Over one hundred students from schools throughout Plano kicked off their summer vacation with four days filled with music, fun, and games last week at Plano West Senior High School.  Plano West Choir’s Syncopation and Rhapsody hosted Summer Showtime ’08, a pop choir camp for children entering fifth through tenth grades.

Cathy Koziatek and Kathy Hackett, Plano West Choir Directors were the Summer Showtime directors.  They were assisted by the choir directors from other Plano schools along with Halley Radebaugh and Nick Tatum, student directors.  Janet Hatcher, Renner Middle School Choir Director, served as camp administrator.  Thirty-four members of Syncopation, Rhapsody, and other Plano West Choirs served as choreographers and camp counselors.

“Summer Showtime is really fun,” according to Nick Tatum.  “I look forward to taking part in it every year.  I enjoy teaching the campers something that I love to do.”

“What a great week!  This was one of our best camps ever,” concluded Cathy Koziatek.  “We have received numerous calls and emails complimenting the camp – especially the counselors.  Thanks to all who made it happen with your smiles, music, choreography, patience, creativity, and fun,” stated Kathy Hackett.

This year’s camp theme was “Pop Rocks,” and the campers sang as well as learned choreography and staging to the Top 40 tunes of the 1980’s.  Students were divided into two groups – one for students entering fifth through seventh grades and another for those entering eighth through tenth grades.  The camp concluded with a performance of the music learned throughout the week as well as solos performed by a few campers.  Many of the performers donned 80’s-themed accessories to set the mood for the show while parents reminisced about the music they enjoyed during that era.

Sisters Jennifer and Julia Goebel have attended Summer Showtime every year since 2004, just one year after its inception.  Julia, who will be a ninth grader at Jasper HS in the fall, says, “The songs are really fun, and the counselors make it awesome!  I have fun seeing my Summer Showtime friends each year when I return to camp.”   This camp has come full circle for Jennifer, who remarked, “As a camper, I always looked up to the counselors, and now as a camp counselor and member of Syncopation, I ensure the students have the same great experience that I had.”

Some of the hits heard throughout the week included “What Time Is It?” and “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” sung by the fifth through seventh grade campers.  The eighth through tenth grade group rocked to “Footloose” and “Life is a Highway.”  The entire theatre was filled with energy when the combined groups performed the medley, “Awesome 80’s.”

Tentative Summer Showtime ’09 dates are June 10 – 13.  Don’t miss the fun!  Contact Plano West Senior High Choral department for information.
