Audience Travels the World with Plano West Choir

1 Rating / 0 Comments
Plano West Senior High Choir's spring production, “Showtime ’08:  Destinations” gave the audience that packed the Plano West Theatre the opportunity to travel to many exotic destinations through music.  Songs ranged from current to classic pop, and included favorites such as “Sentimental Journey,” “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “Route 66,” and “If You’re Gonna Play in Texas.”  This fully staged production kept the audience entertained with dynamic choreography, spectacular lighting, and creative costumes.

One of the most incredible numbers was “Steppin' to the Bad Side” which was performed by the combined choirs under black light. The performers wore black outfits with white gloves, socks, and headbands, and all the audience could see were the headbands, hands and feet wave and dance to the music...the illusion of bodiless figures and synchronization was electrifying.

"Showtime '08:  Destinations" is the biggest show that the West Choir presents during the school year,” according to Kathy Hackett, Director of Choral Activities for PWSH.  “The annual event has become one that our students look forward to from the beginning of the school year.  This is the one time the students take ownership of the show.  They helped plan the staging, lighting and sound design, costuming, program design, theme, and more. It was great fun and we had a standing-room-only audience!"

The concert took place on April 25, and featured all of the school’s choirs:  Chorale, A Cappella Women, Madrigals, Rhapsody, and Syncopation.  Students also had the opportunity to perform as soloists and small-group ensembles.  The Class of 2008 let their fans know their fall 2008 destinations by wearing their upcoming college t-shirts.  A video tribute to the graduating seniors topped off the evening.

“This production was truly a collaborative effort by the students, directors, and the booster club,” states Cathy Curry, Plano West Choir Booster Club President.  “The booster club, made up of PWSH parent volunteers, plays a significant role in supporting this event that showcases West’s outstanding student talent.”

“The greatest reward was watching all the choir students pull together for this production,” states Andrea Dunlevy, Booster Club volunteer and concert Producer.  “Energetic at times, funny, and fast-paced with a wonderful variety of music for all ages…the audience was very in tune, and that made the show even more enjoyable.  The students’ hard work, practice, and dedication were rewarded when the lights went down and the curtain opened to their performance of Destinations!

Don’t miss the final concert of the school year when pop ensembles, Syncopation and Rhapsody perform an outdoor concert in the Plano West Courtyard the evening of May 23, at 7:00 PM.
