“The Frisco Wal-Mart Supercenter and its generous customers have gone above and beyond in their dedication to raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network which benefits Children’s Medical Center,” said Hudson Akin, executive vice president of development for Children’s.
“We applaud these associates for their continuous efforts to make life better for children,” Akin continued. “In total, Wal-Mart entities in North Texas raised $617,000 for Children’s Miracle Network in 2007.”
Mackinlee Waddell, age 12, is just one of the many patients Children’s MedicalCenter helps every year. She was diagnosed with an enlarged left ventricle of her heart (dialated cardiomyopathy) at 2 months. At age 5, she underwent open heart surgery to repair the leaking valve.
Today, Mackinlee’s heart functions close to normal. Although she continues to see a pediatric cardiologist and will be on medication the rest of her life, she puts her heart to work every day. She’s on a competitive cheerleading squad, plays softball and basketball – and she’s a Miracle Child for Children’s Medical Center, giving back by speaking at events and visiting other children in the hospital.
Mackinlee’s mother, Susie Waddell says, “Everyone at Children’s has been so wonderful to us. We give back any way we can – and the money we raise goes to support research and helping other children.”
“Wal-Mart is proud to support the Children’s Miracle Network through our fundraising efforts in stores and through our Foundation," said Daniel Morales, Wal-Mart. “For more than 20 years, our efforts have supported local children’s hospitals and their families in the communities we serve.”Nationally, Wal-Mart is celebrating its 21st year of raising funds for Children’s Miracle Network, having raised more than $431 million to benefit more than 170 children’s hospitals throughout North America. Wal-Mart entities sponsor a variety of fundraising activities for Children’s Miracle Network throughout the year such as balloon icon sales, hot dog sales, golf tournaments, walk-a-thons and garage sales.
Funds raised in North Texas benefit patients at one of the nation’s leading not-for-profit pediatric medical center, Children’s MedicalCenter. Last year alone, Children’s experienced more than 360,000 individual patient encounters, and with the expanding North Texas population, the need for advanced pediatric care for all children continues to grow. This year, Children’s will allocate its 2007 Children’s Miracle Network gifts to support pediatric research studies; which will focus on the development of therapies to defeat infant and childhood diseases.
