Hampton Preparatory, the newest campus of UpliftEducation, is continually gaining ground as it heads for the finish line of its first academic year. And, it recently received a gift from someone who knows alittle something about achieving success on a competitive playing field.
Emmitt Smith, record-breaking athlete and former Dallas Cowboy, gifted the school with a $5,000 grant through his Pat &Emmitt Smith Charities in partnership with All Stars Helping Kids, which funds organizations that provide a strong foundation for academic success, a thriving career, and options throughout life. On Wednesday, he was on hand to visit with students and staff.
“We’re so appreciative that Pat & Emmitt Smith have demonstrated commitment to educating Dallas youth through their gift,” said Priscilla Parhms, senior school director of Hampton Preparatory. “We hope that in visiting Hampton Preparatory and interacting with its students, that Mr. Smith saw firsthand the lives that will be improved by the foundation’s contribution.”
The gift will be used to fund Hampton Preparatory’s general operating needs.
Located in the former home of the University of North Texas, Hampton Preparatory opened on August 27, 2007 to serve a predominately African American and low-income student population. Hampton Preparatory currently has 200 students in grades 5- 7 and 9, and will grow to a K-12 campus by 2012. Its mission is to provide an education that empowers students to reach their highest potential and inspires their love of learning. They achieve this mission through implementing rigorous coursework, nurturing relationships and fostering a professional learning environment.
Uplift invites the community to visit its school campuses and learn more about charter schools and the difference they can make in students’ lives. Visit Uplifteducation.org for more information or to schedule a tour.
