Canterbury Episcopal School's Annual Tribute to African American History
On Thursday, February 28th Canterbury Episcopal School was privileged to host State Representative Helen Giddings at our Annual Tribute to African American History. The program was organized by Rhonda Everett, Parent Organization Co-chair.
Emcee for the program was 3rd grader, Lauren Eriksen, from Waxahachie. The program began with a beautiful dance number choreographed by Cynthia Terry and performed by students in grades 3-8. It was a stirring way to get the program going. Well done ladies!
Our K-2 students sang two songs "Braided Hair" and "True Colors".
Middle and Upper School students spoke to acknowledge the contribution of six African Americans. We learned something new about Garrett Augustus Morgan, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, Benjamin Banneker, Madame C. J. Walker, Dr. Mae Jemison, and Maya Angelou. Ours speakers were Ambreshia Lewis, Claire Metoyer, Nina Yancy, Khloe Scurry, Meaghan Pearson, Elyse Bryant, Maya Skinner, Karynah Diaz, and Sydney Elliott.
Third through 5th grade students sang "Singabahambayo- or We are Marching to Freedom" and "Booker T. Washington".
Our VIPs were State Representative Helen Giddings, Mrs. Madelyn Chafin, and Tom Easterling with the Golf Club of Dallas.
Refreshments were provided by Canterbury parents Tim and Sherice Brown. Logical Choice Computer Repair underwrote the Kente' cloth skirts for the dancers. Mr. Shanon Smeya and Mrs. Annette Smith provided leadership with our music. Hats off to our volunteers Sherice Brown, Rhonda and Lloyd Everett, LaTambra Gibson, Erika Hemphill, Marilyn Larson, and Shannon Thaxton.
We thank our students and teachers for providing a wonderful Tribute to African Americans. Visit the Canterbury School website at www.thecanterburyschool.org to view additional photos from this event.
