Math Counts is a national competition sponsored by engineers. The Texas Society of Professional Engineers holds a Regional Competition at Southern Methodist University in Dallas each year to increase enthusiasm for achievement in middle school math. Students in grades 6-8 participated in four parts of this competition. The final round in the count down is where the top ten students compete in pairs for the top 4 individual school winners.
Canterbury Episcopal School had the top four winners in grades 7 & 8:
1st place Samantha Leonard – grade 7 (winner of TI 84+ calculator valued at $115)
2nd place Andrew Burchell – grade 8 winner of $25 cash
3rd place Michael Martin – grade 8 winner of $20 cash
4th place Alex Powers- grade 8 winner of $15 cash
Grade 6 Math Counts winners were announced by Hazel Wiley, Canterbury Math Teacher:
1st place Rachel Donovan, Mallory Khouw, Caleb Shepherd, and Micah Hays
2nd place Aria Biehl, Kim Vu, Ronise Miller, Tamara Martin, Madeline Bixel, Trevor Howard, Joseph Bryce, Evan Conrad, Cameron Maxwell, Clayton Foster, Rylan Brown, Dylan Sills
6th grade winning teams were:
1st place Rachel Donovan, Mallory Khouw, Ronise Miller, and Kim Vu
2nd place Micah Hays, Trevor Howard, Joshua Perkins, Dalton Dismore
Eight middle school students will travel to SMU on February 16 and represent Canterbury in the Math Counts Regional Competition. Canterbury will be sending Michael Martin 8th grade, Timothy Khouw 8th grade, Caitlin Lewis 8th grade, Ciara Hackman 7th grade, Matthew James 7th grade, Olivia Piwetz 7th grade, Mallory Khouw 6th grade, and Micah Hays 6th grade.
