Research shows that failing to use seat belts and speeding contribute to numerous unnecessary fatality accidents each year. Seat belt use is the single most effective action a driver or passenger can take to reduce death in a motor vehicle crash and can reduce the risk of death to front seat occupants by 45% in a car, and 60% in a light truck.
Speeding is one of the most prevalent factors that contributes to collisions and costs the American public approximately 40.4 billion dollars a year. Additionally, speeding reduces a driver’s ability to safely navigate around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a dangerous situation, and contributes to approximately 30% of all fatal crashes.
Rowlett officers will be assigned to work overtime funded by the Texas Department of Transportation to specifically target seat belt, speeding and hazardous violation enforcement. In addition, officers working regular patrol beats will also be focusing their traffic enforcement efforts on these types of violations.
Lt. Steve Ferrie
“The goals of this initiative are to save lives and increase safety through voluntary compliance. We hope that our motoring public will assist us in our efforts by voluntarily buckling up, watching their speed and driving safely. Obeying the traffic laws doesn’t cost a dime. Ignoring them will cost the violator a citation during this intensified enforcement.”
