"Hello Marcia, As a former 8th grade Science Teacher in the Dallas public Schools, I can certainly appreciate your concern for the future of our disadvantaged population of students. Although President Obama has so graciously invested about $5 billion in stimulus money into Texas public school funding and particularly the Title I program, to date Texas has only received approximately one-half percent of that $200 million designated for Title I. I will strongly support any and all policy solutions that expand resources for childcare and early education initiatives at the local, state and federal level in order to maximally draw down those monies. I will also advocate for the use of Title I funds in higher teacher salaries, after-school programs for low-income students, and in the development of programs for culturally and linguistically diverse children. All are essential to the production of a generation of high quality achievers. It is imperative that significant investments in early education be made in order to stifle the number of referrals to the Special Education system, increase graduation rates, decrease the influx of youth into the criminal justice system, and ultimately, to further close the income-earning gaps in our state. A healthy Texas population and a well-educated population is the key to maintaining our future global economic competitive edge."
