Each year the St. Barnabas Health Fair expands and improves the services and information provided for the Richardson community through its health fair. In addition to free back-to-school immunizations, the expanded 2010 Health Fair will include health information for all ages. It will be held Saturday, August 21st from 10 a.m. to1 p.m at St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church, 1220 West Beltline Road, Richardson. A special entry for Seniors will open at 9 a.m.
At their request, RISD nurses from Richardson High School have joined St. Barnabas in this annual event, participating in the planning andimplementation of those plans. Their direct contact with students gives them insight into the health needs of families, such as nutrition, controlling cholesterol and blood pressure, dental care, and drug and substance abuse awareness.
Another new feature, an event called "Hard Hats for Little Heads," is a program sponsored by the Texas Medical Association Foundation and co-funded by the Texas Academy of Family Physicians. One hundred free bike safety helmets will be distributed. Richardson Bike Mart will have several bicycles on display and will share safety information.
For the first time the Planning Committee is reaching out to our Asian neighbors. Fliers have been translated into Chinese and are being distributed by the Chinese Community Heritage Center.
-Mini-seminars for senior citizens will cover a number of interest areas. "Osteoporosis," presentation by the National Osteoporosis Foundation, North Dallas Group; "Alzheimer’s Disease," presentation by Dee Bergan, JD, MA for the Alzheimer’s Association; "Medications: Not Just Pills," presented by Cheryl Acres, RN, CCM, of Comprehensive Care Management; "Aging in Place," presentation by Armand Christopher, SRES, of Designing Access; "Health Care Reform - Changes to Medicare," presentation by Terry Warner, Agency of Terry Warner; and "Living Wills/Advance Medical Directives," presentation by Lori Leu, JD, Elder Law Attorney;
Interspersed among these activities will be the popular drawings for prizes every 30 minutes. Better crowd control, bottled water availability, and fun children activities will make the 2010 Health Fair bigger, better and more fun for all.
