Americans take fourth straight win, beat Laredo 5-4 in OT

0 Ratings / 0 Comments

LAREDO, Texas – The Allen Americans extended their undefeated start to 4-0 in their inaugural season after pulling out a 5-4 overtime win over the Bucks in Laredo’s home opener tonight.

The entertaining game started with two fights four minutes in. Americans’ forward and well-known tough guy Britt Dougherty took down Laredo’s Robin Richards after the two skated in circles for a few seconds. As soon as the next puck dropped, Allen’s Brandon Straub and the Bucks’ Justin Styffe went at it.

The scoring started midway through the first when Laredo’s Lance Monych and Igor Agarunov put the Bucks up 2-0. The Americans responded with goals from Bill Loupée and Bruce Graham to make it 2-2.

Laredo regained the lead in the second when Jeff Bes scored almost four minutes into the period to put the Bucks up 3-2. The Americans tied it up on a goal from Bruce Graham and then took the lead for the first time in the game when Nathan O’Nabigon scored on the power play to put the score at 4-3.

Laredo tied the game 4-4 when Maxime Lincourt scored on the power play just under two minutes into the third. The Americans kept the game interesting when they took penalties late in the period, giving the Bucks a five-on-three power play with 1:28 left in regulation. Allen killed off the five-on-three to push the game into four-on-four overtime.

Defenseman Chris Kaufman had the game-winning goal when he scored 1:21 into overtime. He was named first star of the game and finished with two points. Bruce Graham received third star honors and also grabbed two points tonight.

Lakehead University star Chris Whitley made his professional career debut in between the pipes tonight, earning his first win and making 28 saves.

The Americans are the only team in the CHL to have no regulation or overtime losses.

Allen will travel across the metroplex to take on the defending CHL Champion Texas Brahmas in North Richland Hills Oct. 31 at 7:05 p.m. The teams split the two preseason contests against each other, each club winning on the road.
