Today Jenice Johnson and I headed out into the White Rock community to find some action in our neighborhood. We decided to stop by the Lakewood Library, as we knew our friends were hard at work getting ready for this weekend's annual LibraryFest.
Two rooms were overflowing with books as library friends sorted, categorized and stacked more than 5,000 gently-used books in preparation for Saturday's big annual event.
Among the plethora of books were many 'diamonds in the rough,' including old Hollywood-themed hardbacks such as biographies on Mae West, Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. Jenice and I spotted lots of nice picture books too -- great for the coffee table!
Other books we found were ones that featured old Native American portraits (Jenice's pick), sports books, Harry Potter books, art books and DVDs, videos and CDs too.
One room is solely dedicated to cookbooks -- 1,200 of them came from an old estate, estimated to be around 30-years of collecting.
The library had so many generous donations this year, they already have 1,000 books put up that are being saved for next year.
Book prices range from 50 cents to $2 each, and there are bulk deals as well.
Don't miss the chance to find lots of great books and more for a steal!
The Lakewood LibraryFest is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Lakewood Branch Library on 6121 Worth Street.
Oh yeah, there will also be live music and free activities for the little ones, including face painting and crafts. And don't forget -- all the proceeds go back to the library!
