With Veteran's Day coming up, I decided to head out to D-FW Airport to check out the USO United Through Reading program. Thanks to the amazing volunteers there, I got a behind the scenes look at how they help troops stay connected to their family while they're overseas. Check it out!

It’s that time of year when we all love to watch the trees change from lush greens to shades of red, orange and yellow.

But here at neighborsgo, we’re keeping an even closer eye on Irving’s trees.

Check out page 10 for our cover story profile on Irving resident Lorraine Taylor, who, in addition to being the chair of the Irving Arts Board, has made significant efforts to preserve the majestic Post Oak trees that line the streets of her neighborhood—the Heritage District.

And check out page 21 for a story about one special Post Oak in particular along MacArthur Boulevard. The city was scheduled to break ground on a new fire station right where the tree sits, but the project was recently put on hold. At the behest of residents and city officials, city staff is back to the drawing board looking at ways to build the fire station without having to chop down the centuries-old oak.

While most residents and city officials see the importance of building a new, state-of-the-art fire station to replace the run-down one just a few miles north, they can also see the importance of preserving the trees of Irving’s history. It’s a privilege for me to be able to report on a city where people truly care about not only respecting their heroic firefighters with a beautiful facility, but also about respecting the trees that have made up the beautiful, natural landscape of the city for hundreds of years.

Both of these things are worth protecting, and I applaud city officials and residents for looking to do what’s right for Irving.

Move over Ryan Seacrest — you aren’t the only one putting the spotlight on regular people doing extraordinary things.

Yep, just call us star-makers.

You see, neighborsgo is a sort of media catalyst. You post your stories on neighborsgo.com, we print those stories in our weekly editions, and sometimes, those stories land on television.

Such is the case with 9-year-old Hannah Nguyen.

Just a few weeks ago, Matt MacVeigh with Irving ISD posted a story about how the Lee fourth-grader started a small business selling homemade button rings. (She’s quite the artist too — the ring designs, which her mother says Hannah does entirely on her own, are absolutely adorable!) We here at neighborsgo thought it was a fantastic post with great pictures, so we made it the cover story of Irving’s Oct. 2 edition.

Almost immediately, WFAA-TV picked up the story and featured it on its evening news broadcast.

Perhaps our coverage of the story in neighborsgo will help Hannah reach her ultimate goal: an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Other neighborsgo stories that have made it to the tube include the story of Dallas-area cake designer Nikki Jackson, who created a unique, life-sized cake version of one of her not-so-traditional brides. We also launched the story of Mimi, a 13-year-old Golden Retriever who was severely burned in a Garland house fire and how the folks at Operation Kindness nursed her back to health.

Everyone has a story to tell, and no matter how small, we want to hear it. You never know — it could be our next cover story, or even the next top story on the local news.

So, congratulations to Irving’s newest star, Hannah Nguyen! We can’t wait to see where your talent and ingenuity takes you.

Now, who’s next?
