Learn Social Networking at the Library

The Irving Public Library has added a free social media course for beginners to its lineup of computer classes. Introduction to Social Media will be offered at 2 p.m. July 31 at the Central Library, 801 W. Irving Blvd. Ben Toon, local media specialist, will demonstrate how people can get the most out of websites such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

In the class, Toon will explain why social media websites have become so relevant in our times, and how novices can take advantage to learn new skills, find jobs and stay in touch with friends and family. In addition to a tour of social media websites, Toon will discuss important issues such as personal security on the web and how to share video and pictures online.

“Social networking sites are becoming a critical component for how we share information and build relationships in the 21st century,” said Toon. “In my job and personal life I find websites like Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube can offer an experience tailored to my interests, well beyond just surfing the web. Social media sites help me stay connected with friends, enrich my work life, and provide an opportunity to have a voice in the world."
