KFC = Know (No) Free Chicken
William Congrove, the English author and poet, wisely penned in 1697, "Hell hath no furry like a woman scorned".
This week, Oprah featured a show called 'Harpo Hookups" where she helped fulfil a dream for lucky viewers. I love these "Oprah makes a dream come true" shows. I cry all the way through them. At the beginning of this particular episode she announced that on this show she would be giving ALL of her viewers a hook up - not just the people in the audience. Whoo hoo!

The "hook up" was a coupon to Kentucky Fried Chicken for a 2-piece grilled chicken meal. Did you know that KFC was now serving grilled chicken? Exactly. This is why it SEEMED like a brilliant move for KFC to partner with Oprah and get publicity for their new grilled menu items.
I love anything that's free, especially food. So, I went to Oprah.com and printed out the coupon.
Today, I thought I would redeem my fabulous Oprah offer so I drove to a KFC about a mile from my office. I drove up and saw that the restaurant had pulled a chair out by the driveway with a cardboard sign taped to the back of it that said "No coupons at drive-thru".
I thought that was rather inefficient to make people come into the store vs. herding them through the drive-thru, but whatever. I parked and got out of my car. As I approached the door of the restaurant, I saw a sign taped to the door that said "We are not accepting the coupon from Oprah.com" I was so mad, I left and went to Pei Wei instead.
I got online after lunch to find an outlet to address my frustration and saw hundreds of articles and blog posts about others like me who were frustrated and disappointed all across the country. This is a promotional DISASTER. As someone who works in marketing - I am completely intolerant of people who do not think through a promotional idea. Before you launch something on this scale, you had better walk though the steps and make sure you can execute or you will have pissed off people like me blogging about it to anyone who will listen or read.
If you had a negative experience with this promotion also, let me save you some Google time. Email this address: KFC.PublicRelations@KFC.com and make your voice heard.
Don't take food away from a hungry woman! You will rue the day! Rue it!
