Scouts learn about newspapers

Usually Fridays at the West zone neighborsgo office are, for the most part, laid back and have a different feel than other days of the week.

Last Friday, however, was much different than any other I’ve experienced as Cub Scout Pack 857 of Denton Creek Elementary took the office over. Eleven Scouts ages 6- to 7-years-old visited our office as part of their first-year requirements of visiting a newspaper office.

My co-workers and I were more than happy to take a step away from our computers to show the Scouts the ropes of working in the newspaper biz. Den leader Kalyani Chennupati and several Pack 857 parents were in tow to experience the office themselves.

The Scouts watched as senior editor Ruth Haesemeyer clicked through neighborsgo.com choosing timely content for her sections and as Frisco neighborsgo editor Emily Goldstein began the early stages of laying out her issue’s cover. Assistant neighborsgoeditor and sports buff Greg Tepper even showed the kiddos how he edits video for neighborsgo.com.

Even though all of these pit stops at the office were a wonderful learning experience for the Scouts, it was pretty easy to tell what the boys were most excited about—cookies. I know the best way to a kid’s heart is some good, old-fashioned sugar and planned in advance to pick up some baked goodies at Walmart.
