As much as I claim to like cold weather (I really just like
winter clothes), it was extremely difficult to make myself leave my apartment
at all last weekend. So, when Saturday rolled around and it was time for me to
get ready to go to the Exchange Club’s Lake Highlands Live 3, I was dragging my
feat. Little did I know that once I got there my weather-induced grogginess
would disappear completely.
I’ve heard many good things about past years’ events, but I
was still surprised at how much fun it really was. Assistant editor Naquanna
Comeaux and I met up for the quintessential event. The first things I noticed
were the great decorations, the big dance floor and the many instruments (including
a saxophone, drums and guitars) on stage. State Rep. Jerry Allen was even there
to help serve up the hamburger/chicken dinner.
As friends ate together at the decorated tables surrounding
the dance floor, we walked around taking photos and getting the lay of the
land. After stopping to say hello to president elect Rhonda Russell, we ran
into Ryan Rommel, who was busy signing up new club members. After signing up
Kevin Bonahoom, he led us to our unofficial tour guide for the evening, Adrienne
White. Adrienne’s husband, Steve, who we met up with later, is publicity
director for the Exchange Club. Steve and Rhonda keep us updated with Exchange
Club happenings throughout the year.
Adrienne was attending her first LH Live event as well we
learned. She told us that she grew up in Lake Highlands, attended LakeHighlandsHigh School, and returned
to live in LH after college much like many of her fellow neighbors. When I
asked her why so many people have decided to stay in this area for so many
years, she said it’s because it’s between Dallas
and Richardson
and still maintains that small-town feel. From what I’ve seen so far, I agree.
Lake Highlands seems to be nicely tucked away, fairly self-contained and perfectly
situated.
Exchange Club members celebrated for many reasons that
night. The fundraising event was a success. Everyone seemed to be having fun.
And, the club reached their goal of 200 in membership.
The best part of the evening for us had to be when the dance
contest started. I thought people would be kind of hesitant to get out there
and let loose. Luckily, I was wrong. Friends and couples took to the floor
naturally as the three bands – Wes Nile and the Texas Skeeters, the
Lupners and the Pit Pops – took turns providing the music.
Other than being welcoming and friendly, people in Lake
Highlands definitely know how to have fun.
