Nine-year-old Ralphie Parker wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. He pleads his case before his mother, his teacher, and even Santa Claus himself, but the consistent response is, “You’ll shoot your eye out!” All the nostalgic elements of the popular movie are here: the exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the boys’ experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin & Ralphie’s father winning a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg. Truly a holiday classic!

The traditional Festival of Lessons and Carols was first held on Christmas Eve in 1918 at King’s College in Cambridge, England. The next year the Order of Service was revised and from then on the service has always begun with the hymn, “Once in Royal David’s City.” In the years to follow, carols were often changed and new carols were introduced, but the lessons and prayers have remained virtually intact from the beginning.
The idea for a service of Lessons and Carols originated in 1880 when the Archbishop of Canterbury put together a service for Christmas Eve. The King’s College service became an accepted model and has been adapted again and again by other churches around the world.
The main theme of the Service of Lessons and Carols is “the loving purposes of God” presented through the scripture readings. These readings provide both the structural pattern a | Grace Bible Church

The Science of Spying – Extended!
Held over by popular demand, the interactive The Science of Spying exhibit gives eager spy-wannabes of all ages an opportunity to experience the latest spy gadgets and techniques - including remote-control spy planes, night-vision goggles, biometric scanning, infiltrating computer systems and the dolphin spy camera. They also learn how to detect liars, crack safes and find hidden clues. Visitors begin to find out about the plans of the shadowy organization OSTECK, follow the clues to uncover the secret location of its HQ and then escape using their wits.
The museum is open Monday to Saturday: 10 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday: Noon to 5 PM. General admission for members to the museum and The Science of Spying is free. Collin County Livestock Show
Please come out to Myers Park located in McKinney, Texas for the Collin County Livestock show. Starting Jan. 5th-Jan.9th, students for all over Collin County will be showing their animals. This is a free public event and everyone is welcome and encouraged to come out and visit the livestock barns and attend the shows. The students are all members of FFA and 4-H and are showing lambs, goats, steers, heifers, pigs, rabbits, and chickens. Double Vision: A View of Florence Past & Present is a Florentine rephotographic project funded by a 2008 Fulbright Grant and is based exclusively on the private collections of the Fratelli Alinari in Florence, Italy (the world’s oldest photo archive). Local artist, Amy Holmes George, retraced the steps of the Alinari photographers, visited significant sites within the city of Florence, rephotographed them from the same point of view using today’s digital technology and then printed the images in platinum/palladium, paying homage to an historical photographic process commonly employed during the time of the Alinari. | Laura Moore Fine Art Studios

HIGHLAND VILLAGE, Texas – Celebrations in Highland Village will be the site for the 2009 Denton County Master Gardeners Association Graduation and the Community Partner Award on Thursday, January 13th at 6PM.
Twenty-five new graduates will be awarded the designation of Denton County Master Gardener whose mission is to educate Denton County residents about safe, effective and sustainable horticultural practices that promote development of healthy gardens, landscapes and communities. To receive this designation, students must complete a comprehensive course of study and seventy volunteer hours of community service. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative Extension office to provide horticultural-related information to their communities.

Poverty Simulation Program
The community is invited to experience first-hand how those in poverty deal with hunger, disability, unemployment, transportation and much, much more by simulating a month in the life of someone less fortunate. The event is intended to increase the understanding of the struggles of our students who live in impoverished situations. Attend this powerful "Poverty Simulation" program on Thursday, January 14th, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Plano ISD Administration Building.
Admission is free, but pre-registration is required. We recommend a donation of $5 be given to CITY House, the only homeless shelter for children in the Collin County area.

Dallas & the Spanish American War
Between April and August of 1898, the United States and Spain fought what was referred to as “the splendid little war”. Join the Mesquite Historical and Genealogical Society on January 14th to hear Ed Owens, archivist, author, and re-enactor, explain the impact of this war on Dallas County. Ed has been an archival assistant at the Dallas Historical Society for over two years, and before that he worked for over 28 years as a graphic artist for the Dallas Morning News. Ed’s lifetime fascination with history has led him to be the principal guest speaker about Dallas for the DHS on most military subjects. As a re-enactor he does many different impressions, but his favorite is Dallas in the Spanish American War. | Mesquite Main Library

PSHS Spring Musical: Side Show
Plano Senior High School will bring an innovative work to the community when its theatre department presents Henry Krieger's and Bill Russell's "Side Show." Behind its gorgeous music and carefully crafted lyrics is a story about two bright and beautiful young women who were joined together at the hip - literally. "Side Show" is a musical about Violet and Daisy Hilton, a real-life set of conjoined twins who were inseparably connected together for life.
While only playing for 91 performances on Broadway, "Side Show" garnered wide critical acclaim and earned four Tony Award nominations in 1998, a tough season on Broadway with competition from "Ragtime," "The Lion King" and "The Scarlet Pimpernel." 18th Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competiti
The 18th Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition will be held at The Majestic Theatre in Downtown Dallas on Friday, Jan. 15. Incorporating ideals from Dr. King’s writings and speeches, fourth- and fifth-grade students will compose and present original speeches, not to exceed five minutes, addressing the topic: “What will I be able to achieve in my life because of what Dr. King achieved in his?” Students from 15 Dallas ISD schools participate in preliminary and semifinal competitions to earn one of eight finalist spots. Students are judged on delivery, stage presence and decorum, content interpretation, and memorization at all three levels of the competition.

Heritage Farmstead Museum wants you to come out and play during Home School Day!

For the third consecutive year the National Landmark Heritage Farmstead Museum in central Plano will offer a program specifically designed for children who are home schooled. The farmstead is a living example of North Texas History circa 1890 to 1940, walking on the grounds of the once 360 acre farmstead is literally like traveling back in time. There is no better way to learn about history than to see, hear, touch and feel the past. This year’s program will focus on the importance of a physically active life that was essential to good health and productive farming.
Along with the traditional offerings at Home School Day the HFM will have several new presentations including a lesson in 1890’s children’s fitness, a wool spinning demonstration using wool from the farmsteads own sheep and a behind the scenes tour of the curatorial offices. The Bishop's Gala for Catholic Charities 2010
Catholic Charities of Dallas will host their twelfth annual Bishop’s Gala, “Boots and Dazzle, Big D Style”, on January 16, 2010 at the Hilton-Anatole. This year’s event is highly anticipated due to the huge success and turn out years past. This year’s Gala will provide their guests with an evening that includes dinner, a live auction, raffle with a drawing for a trip to Rome/Florence, as well as a concert featuring Word Record Recording Artist, Diamond Rio. ALZHEIMER’S CAREGIVERS SUPPORT GROUP
The Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support group at New Life In Christ Lutheran Church will begin with our first meeting of the year on Saturday, January 16, 2010—11:00 A.M.—12:30 P.M. Our speaker for the beginning of the year will be Mrs. Linda Ross, M.S., Director of Programs & Services from the Greater Dallas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Mrs. Ross will take us through the stages of Alzheimer’s Disease and the heartbreaking trials that caregivers go through.
The support group meetings are FREE and open to everyone who is interested in learning more about the disease. Alzheimer’s Disease does not only affect the elderly but those in their earlier years. We should be reminded that when we misplace an item or walk into a room and forget why we are there, this is not a precursor to Alzheimer’s Disease. Further, we need to know the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Celebrate the Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth’s 40th Anniversary kick-off at the 10th Annual Mochitsuki New Year’s Celebration. Enjoy a mochitsuki demonstration (pounding sweet rice to make rice cakes) and other New Year’s activities and performances.

Now, for the first time, an all-new production will tour across North America. The stage musical remains rue to the spirit of the original stories as it follows two great friends, the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad through four fun-filled seasons. Waking from hibernation in the spring, they proceed to plant gardens, swim, rake leaves, and go sledding, learning life lessons along the way, including a most important one about friendship and rejoicing in the attributes that make each of us different and special.

Generations Celebrating Life for Carson
“Generations Celebrating Life for Carson” will be an event with activities for the young and the young at heart. Festivities include food by Bar-B-Cutie, face painting, bounce houses, a cake sale, and a raffle of kid-themed baskets. The highlight of the evening will be a performance by Lyndy Phillips, an illusionist and “entertainer who captivates audiences with laugh-out-loud stories, comedy sleight of hand, pick pocketing, and audience interaction.”

Promise House 25th Anniversary Community Champion awards and event to benefit homeless, runaway and at-risk teens sponsored by Cuba Libre Restaurant and Pama Liqueur
DALLAS – Jan. 7, 2010 – Promise House, a Dallas nonprofit agency founded in 1984 to serve homeless, runaway and at-risk teens, is hosting A Red Carpet affair at Cuba Libre on Monday, January 18, 2010 from 7 – 9 p.m. to benefit the organization.
The event will include lite-bites and appetizers from Cuba Libre, specialty cocktails by Pama Liqueur and paparazzi photographers to capture moments on the red carpet. Attire is evening casual.
