Tue 24 Jun 2008 7:00 PM Scahill "Blackwater" Booksigning
Many political commentators draw similarities between the Vietnam War and the current Iraq War. The Cold War ~ The War on Terror. The Soviet Union ~ al Qaeda. Ho Chi Minh ~ Saddam Hussein. These are specters that the government props up as legitimate reasons to pre-emptively invade another country. However, there is one big difference between the illegitimate war of this generation, and the former illegal war: THE DRAFT. How has the military avoided a draft? One way is by the privatization of the military. Companies like Blackwater are legalized paramilitary troops - killers for hire. And why join the army when you can make beaucoup bucks with private corporations - with more benefits and less oversight? Jeremy Scahill investigates these and other issues in his book, "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army." The Dallas Peace Center is hosting a talk and booksigning with the author later this month.

Thu 26 Jun 2008 6:00 PM Ron Hall Exhibition
Cerulean Gallery presents the exhibition "Tranquility" from June 26 – August 11, 2008 Opening Reception: Thursday, June 26th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm "Tranquility" chronicles five artists who create artwork as a path to their memory and life and as a way to seek serenity. Ron Hall, a local art dealer, ranch cowboy and co-author of "Same Kind of Different As Me" began creating mixed media sculpture as a way to combat insomnia induced from the death of his wife, Debbie. He labored through all types of mediums – card board, post it notes, straight pins, and paper clips -- as a means to create a replacement for the loss. Later his sculptures termed "Rocky Pop" were reformed into large steel sculptures with the help of a welder.

Fri 27 Jun 2008 6:30 PM Pastors for Peace Caravan Reception
For over forty years, the people of Cuba have been the target of a ruthless and inhumane blockade, hurting those citizens who are most vulnerable. The Pastors for Peace Friendship Caravan challenges this policy by delivering much needed supplies to Cuba every year, and views the embargo as “an immoral policy that uses hunger and disease as political weapons. Those attending the reception are also encouraged to bring food and refreshments for the pot luck. Dallasites are asked to bring items to donate to the Caravan. Medicines, vitamins, and antiseptics (with expiration dates no earlier than February 2009) are welcomed. Walking canes, reading glasses, wheel chairs and school supplies are also encouraged. Fri 11 Jul 2008 8:00 AM The Music Man Presented by McKinney Summer Mu
The Music Man” brings its big parade to McKinney Summer Musicals’ 2008 production with this popular family musical by Meredith Willson. Willson delivers a dynamite score of rousing marches, barbershop quartets and sentimental ballads with popular songs like “Ya Got Trouble”, “Lida Rose” and “Till There Was You”. After a successful run from 1990 to 1996, McKinney Summer Musicals was reinstated in 2007 with a very successful production of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”, attended by over 2500. This production by returning Director Kevyn Robertson and Music Director Larry Neel pull all the stops, featuring dynamite singer/actors Don High and Deanna Sarkur in the roles of Professor Harold Hill and Marian, the Librarian; a reunion of the 70's barbershop quartet Forty Acre Four as the Quartet Harold forms from feuding Scholl Board members, an extremely well choreographed Dancing Chorus, creative lighting, flying sets, and the funniest group of "hens" ever.

Sat 12 Jul 2008 9:00 AM Local Family Blood Drive
I would like to ask for the community's help in donating blood for a local family who has experienced significant accidents over the last few weeks. One member was involved in a farm tractor accident where the tractor flipped on top of him, the other was involved in a motorcycle accident for which she was seriously injured and may never be able to walk the same again. He is still in ICU at a local hospital on a vent. but awake and improving everyday. She is home now in external fixators on her leg and must have someone with her at all times. We are asking for your kindness and help us raise blood donations to help replenish what Carter Bloodcare was so generous to give us in our time of need so that we may help other families in need as ours was. We ask if you are unable to attend the event but still would like to make a contribution to please do so to the Fate Volunteer Fire Department who were the first responders to both accidents and please keep us in your prayers.

Would you like to Recession-proof your happiness? Jennifer Mix-Hickman, CEO of Java Kai, has discovered a simple way to explain our complex personality on one piece of paper. Give her 5 minutes to ask you a few questions and she can tell you what it is you struggle with in life, what your weaknesses are and what you inherent strengths are. Sound amazing? It is. But there’s more. The basic concept is so easy that even a five year old can understand and benefit from learning it. Jennifer breaks down every personality into just four different types, each with their own set of strengths and weaknesses. Each personality type has a Warning Sign that you are heading in the wrong direction. Join Us Tuesday night to learn more!
