Join us for the Tree Dedication and a Sneak Preview of this unique Wal-MartSupercenter on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at 6:00 p.m.
Listening to resident comments at what was considered one of the longest City Council meetings in HighlandVillage, the Wal-Mart Supercenter is scheduled to open on November 7, 2007 with resident input directing many of the unique aspects of this Wal-Mart. One comment in particular, a plea to save a 125+ year-old pecan tree, has grown into a differentiating feature for HighlandVillage’s Wal-MartSupercenter.
After a long process of public input, Wal-Mart engineers had received permission to remove the 125+ year-old pecan tree that stood in the footprint of the new Supercenter. To the credit of Wal-Mart architects and engineers, it was determined the store floor plan could be “flipped” to incorporate the tree as part of the store landscape. An arborist was brought in to verify the health of the tree and to guide in the preservation of the tree throughout the construction process. Now this 125+ year-old landmark pecan tree will be a root destination point for shoppers and provides the canopy for the connection to the City’s natural areas and trail branches.
The land where this new Wal-Mart now sits was once owned by William T. Minor, father of Alice Minor Porter dating back to 1870. This land is representative of the Porter family and remained as such even upon the marriage of Miss Linda Jean Porter to Mr. Jimmy Feagins. The parcel of land, which is best remembered by the Porter cabin and this pecan tree, was sold and most recently developed by Wal-Mart.
The dedication of this landmark pecan tree is to commemorate the history of the Porter and Feagins families.
