Newsflash: aliens have magnetic heads made of crystal; all the world’s long lost treasures are hidden deep within the confides of Area 51 in Nevada, and flying saucers owned by interdimensional space travelers are buried under sacred sites around the globe. All of this and more is revealed in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls.
As someone who is – ahem- let’s just say…not in her twenties anymore, I am shocked to talk to younger folks who’ve never heard of Indiana Jones until a few months ago.
It’s widely believed that the modern day obsession over the whereabouts of the long lost Ark of the Covenant has direct correlation to the success of those older Indiana flicks. The film brought to light the possibility that perhaps the Ark is available for us to find somewhere in our material world, and ever since that movie came out in 1981, everyone has done their level best to find it.
Likewise, the current film Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls may spark yet another craze for future generations to ponder – the mystery surrounding the legendary Crystal Skulls.
Believe it or not, the Crystal Skulls of Indiana Jones’ fantastical kingdom are not merely the wanderings of George Lucas’ and Steven Spielberg’s incredible imaginations, but are actually based in… fact.
Not the kind of fact reserved for true journalists, mind you, but lore based on urban legends told for decades amongst small groups of skull followers. Allow me to explain…
Legend has it that many moons ago, thirteen crystal skulls were left behind by a form of higher intelligence. Now, as mankind reaches the end of the Mayan Calendar and 2012, these skulls are being found throughout the world and will ultimately save planet earth from otherwise inevitable destruction. Who were these higher life forms? Were they members of the ancient Mayan civilization (as was suggested in a recent documentary on the Sci-Fi Channel) or were they from much…farther away?
I first became aware of this phenomenon while traveling around the country promoting my many books on the history and lore of precious gemstones. I ran into people on several occasions who had crystal skulls in their possession and claimed they had special energy.
On a trip to London a few years back, I happened upon one of the famous thirteen skulls, now housed in the British Museum. Another time, I was right here in Dallas at an event featuring Max, the famous skull from Houston, Texas. Both were incredibly interesting specimens, to be sure, but did they have special powers? Hmmmm…..The most famous of all the skulls currently on record belonged to a British man named F. A. Mitchell-Hedges, who is personified today as a real-life Indiana Jones.
In the early 1920’s, Mitchell-Hedges and his daughter Anna conducted an expedition to British Honduras (modern-day Belize) on her seventeenth birthday, and it was there that Anna found the famous skull sparkling amongst artifacts in the ancient city of Lubaantun. The lore surrounding this discovery provided much of the backdrop for the new Indiana Jones movie.
The Mitchell-Hedges Skull, as it is now called, was subjected to a wide array of laboratory tests initially concluding that no human hand could have possibly crafted it, giving rise to theories that extraterrestrials delivered it as a gift to mankind, a message of saving grace to humanity. (The alien-shaped skull in Indiana Jones was obviously inspired by those otherworldly origins).
Hedges claimed the skull was 3,600 years old and said it had sacred Mayan connections. The skull was eventually debunked by many notable sources including my friend Rob McConnell (host of the popular Canadian X-Zone Radio Program) who spent years uncovering sound evidence that Mitchell-Hedges purchased the skull himself at an auction in 1943 at Sotheby’s in London. The Smithsonian Institution finally said the Mitchell-Hedges Skull was not crafted through otherworldly means, yet there is still to this day no clear explanation about how such a specimen came into being. And so…the mystery continues!
Skull followers, of which there are many, believe that for the world to be saved from potentially cataclysmic events of 2012, all remaining skulls must be located and that hopefully, they’ll turn up… in the next four years! Sounds crazy, I know, but it’s….true!
Last year I wrote a short book called Crystal Skull Consciousness outlining the modern day fascination with our human crystalline form. I was faced with all the difficult questions any skull researcher has:
1) Are the skulls actually left behind from the ancient Mayans like the new Indiana Jones movie suggests, or are they cosmic gifts from our extraterrestrial brothers in space?
And most importantly –
2) Does any of this matter at all or is it simply a big bunch of skullduggery?

Regardless of whether the stories of the skulls are fact or fiction, I am certain we haven’t heard the end of this mystery yet, and thanks to Lucas and Spielberg, probably won’t for many years to come.
