Best Veterinarian
Dr. Beverly Unger, Angel Veterinary Center, 2940 Long Prairie Road, Flower Mound, 972-539-1800

Dr. Beverly Unger said she was “bowled over” when she learned readers selected her Best Veterinarian in Southern Denton County.

The 21-year veteran vet has worked at AngelVeterinaryCenter in Flower Mound since 2000 and credits her staff for her success and ability to provide top-notch service to her clients.

“I do work hard, but I am very lucky to work with a staff and veterinarians I admire,” Unger said. “I am proud of them.”

Growing up on a farm and ranch in Herndon, Kansas, “animals were our livelihood,” Unger said. An experience on the farm when she was 5 made a particularly strong impact in steering her toward her profession.

“My father could do anything. But he had to call a veterinarian to save a calf,” she said. “I figured if my dad had to get help, then [being a vet] was an important job. From that point on, that’s all I ever wanted to do.”

Unger’s passion for animals doesn’t stop at home. She has a black Labrador and three cats, one of which is quite the matchmaker. Her future husband, Tom Zipfel, found the kitten on the road and brought it to her 20 years ago.

Unger and the rest of the vets and staff at AngelVeterinaryCenter are looking forward to providing even better service to their more than 8,000 clients when their facility opens across the street from their current cramped quarters this summer.

The massive new center will be fully wired with high-tech gadgets to improve care for sick and rehabilitating animals. The new center also will have expansive kennel runs for pets staying overnight.

Although the vet center location will change, Unger’s mission will remain constant.

“I just want to help and do what the pet truly needs,” Unger said.

Q&A

Most common service: Unger’s time is spent mostly in surgery. The center does more spaying and neutering than any other service.

Most unusual experience: While she says she doesn’t do reptiles, she helped a client whose python went on a feeding frenzy and ate a pair of shorts.

Dogs or cats? Unger , who owns both, says the center has more canine clients because they typically require more treatment.

Cool features at new center: Underwater treadmill, hyperbaric chamber, flat screen TVs in kennel runs.
